I do judge a book by its cover, and by the looks of Mellow Mushroom's exterior, I thought, "Ick, health hazard college pizza joint." Fickle Foodie and I had an hour before going to the taping of Esperanza Spalding and Madeleine Peyroux performances on Austin City Limits (Thank you Maggie for posting about the ACL taping giveaway!!!!), and Mellow Mushroom was right across the street.
Ok, so it is a college pizza joint as expected on the drag, but the quality is better than expected. Fickle Foodie and I shared a Philosopher's Pie (Steak, Portobello Mushroom Cap, Artichoke Hearts, Kalamata Olives, Provolone, Feta, and Mozzarella Cheeses on an Oil and Garlic Base) that came to our table piping hot. We would have preferred less olives; I suspect that the intention was to trick customers into thinking that there are more steak and portobello mushrooms than there really are.
The pizza was tasty, filling, and satisfying; it fulfilled its role perfectly and was a great start to the evening.
